News Article Regarding Lake Lanier Dock Permits

Drought causes Lanier cuts
by Tony Wike

BUFORD - The low levels at Lake Lanier have forced the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to cut off permits for new private docks and upgrades to existing docks.

It's something the Corps' had to do before, in keeping with the lake's Low Water Action Plan, and it will stay in effect until the water level reaches 1064. As of Tuesday morning, Lake Lanier was at 1062.79.

"We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but it is important to be able to properly address requests with adequate water to make informed decisions," said a Corps spokesman.

The Corps is also advising boaters to take extra precaution due to the lower levels. Boaters should be especially aware of underwater obstructions such as shallow areas, rocks, stumps and trees.

For additional information or questions contact the Corps at 770-945-9531. For daily lake level information call 770-945-1467. Thirty-day lake level forecasts and historical lake level information can be viewed on the Corps water management website (http://water.sam.usace.army.mil)
